TV Series Finales: Ranking the Most Iconic Endings from "Friends" to "Suits

If there’s one thing that I absolutely hate, it is my favorite show coming to an end. The finale of a TV show can be both exciting and bittersweet. I kind of want the climax to be amazing, successfully wrapping up all character arcs, but I also don’t want my show to come to an end! It has happened far too many times over the years for me not to write a blog about it. Whether you’re a fan of sitcoms or you prefer something more dramatic and action-filled, I promise this list has something for everyone! In this blog, we’ll take a fun look at the ten most famous TV series finales, rating them out of 10 and discussing what I liked and disliked about each one. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just curious, join us as we revisit these iconic endings.

Top 5 TV Series Finales

1. Suits

suits

For those of you who don’t know, "Suits" is a legal drama that follows the life of Mike Ross, a brilliant college dropout who starts working as a law associate for Harvey Specter despite never having attended law school. Personally, I loved the show because it gave me so much hope! Sure, Mike faced his fair share of setbacks in life, but whenever he was given a second chance, he managed to come through. The show is set in a high-profile New York City law firm, blending legal drama with personal storylines, focusing on the relationships and challenges faced by its characters over nine seasons. (Or, should I say 9 VERY LONG seasons.) Personally, I wish the show had ended much sooner when Mike and Rachel left, but whatever, it’s not like the showmakers care about my opinions.

About the Finale: Spoilers Ahead

The " Suits " series finale wraps up the show's major storylines with a blend of closure and nostalgia. Harvey and Donna get married, Louis welcomes his baby, and Mike and Rachel make a brief but welcome return. The episode balances heartfelt moments with a sense of finality, leaving fans with a satisfying conclusion to the beloved series.

Things I Liked:

suits finale

  • Emotional closure for key characters

  • Harvey and Donna's wedding (I mean, please, I have been shipping them since ep1)

  • Cameos by Mike and Rachel

Things I Disliked:

  • I kind of wanted them to take a bang-on final case just to flex off their lawyer skills.

Rating: 8/10

2. Brooklyn 99

brooklyn 99 Finale
"Brooklyn 99" is a comedy series centered around the detectives of the 99th precinct of the NYPD, particularly Jake Peralta, a talented but immature detective. But boy, does his immaturity end up making me laugh every damn time? The show combines humor with heartfelt moments, featuring a diverse cast of characters who form a close-knit, almost family-like unit over its eight seasons. Honestly, the cast was perfect, the storyline was amazing, and I couldn’t have asked for a better show!

About the Finale:

The finale of "Brooklyn 99" is a loving send-off to the characters fans have grown to adore. The episode features a final heist, a staple of the show, which is both hilarious and emotional. You can’t blame me for looking forward to the heist episode every season, come on! Each character gets a moment to shine, and the precinct says goodbye in a manner that stays true to the show's spirit of camaraderie and fun.

Things I Liked:

  • The final heist as a tribute to the series

  • Emotional farewells for all characters

  • Maintained the show's humor and heart

Things I Disliked:

  • A few emotional beats felt a bit rushed but I mean, they only had 20 minutes so I’m willing to let this slide.

Rating: 9/10

3. Modern Family

modern family
About the Series: "Modern Family" is a mockumentary-style sitcom that offers a humorous and often heartwarming look at the lives of the extended Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan. If you’re ever bored and finding something simple to watch over a meal, I would definitely suggest you watch this show. It is perfect in every sense! From the quirky characters to the sarcastic humor, there’s something for all kinds of audiences. Spanning over 11 seasons, the show explores the ups and downs of family life through its diverse characters and their unique perspectives.

About the Finale:

The "Modern Family" finale ties up the various storylines in a sentimental and fitting manner. Each family member moves on to new chapters in their lives, reflecting the show's theme of growth and change. The finale captures the essence of the series, balancing humor with poignant moments. While I wish the show could have gone on longer, Haley should have ended up with Andy, and Manny deserved better, the show ended perfectly. Any more, and the writers might have ended up ruining it!

Things I Liked:

  • Emotional goodbyes and new beginnings

  • Reflections on the characters' growth

  • Maintained the show's humor

Things I Disliked:

  • A few storylines seemed to be hastily wrapped up

4. How I Met Your Mother

About the Series: "How I Met Your Mother" is a sitcom that tells the story of Ted Mosby and his group of friends in New York City. The series is framed as Ted narrating to his children how he met their mother, leading to a mix of comedic and dramatic moments over nine seasons. The best part about the show is that it is based on so much more than just Ted’s love life. From Lily and Marshal’s married life to Barney’s growth as a character going from a playboy to a man in love and Robin’s character choosing career over everything when it mattered, really explored some mature storylines that many people are afraid to touch.

About the Finale:

The finale of "How I Met Your Mother" was highly controversial. While it revealed the mother’s identity and the story behind her, the twist ending, which saw Ted reunite with Robin, divided fans. Some appreciated the twist, while others felt it undermined the series' buildup, and I couldn’t agree more. What the fuck was that ending? All these seasons, we saw Ted and Robin breaking up and patching up, the ending was totally unnecessary. If you ask me, Robin deserved to end up with Barney (because, oh my god, the growth he had shown, and their marriage was going perfectly,) and the last episode should never have happened!

HIMYM Finale

Things I Liked:

  • Ted meeting the mother

  • Emotional moments with the gang

  • Barney's growth as a character

Things I Disliked:

  • Robin and Ted’s reunion felt forced

  • The mother’s story was rushed

  • Disappointed many fans

Rating: 6/10

5. F.R.I.E.N.D.S

About the Series: Does this series even need an introduction? Before I watched it this year, every person on this goddamn planet that heard that I haven’t watched it told me to! Boy, the love people have for this show is extremely hard to put into words, but I’ll still give it a weak try. (For those of you unlike me, who have somehow been able to manage to dodge the peer pressure to watch this show,) "Friends" is a classic sitcom that follows six friends—Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe—navigating life and love in New York City. Over ten seasons, the series became a cultural phenomenon, beloved for its humor, relatable characters, and memorable catchphrases. From Joey’s infamous “How you doin’” to Ross’s terrible love life, this show had something for everyone.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S Finale
About the Finale: The "Friends" finale is widely regarded as one of the best series finales in television history, and I kind of agree with them. It brings closure to each character’s arc, with Monica and Chandler welcoming their twins, Ross and Rachel reuniting, and the group leaving Monica’s apartment for the last time. (I’m not a diehard fan of the show, but this moment had me tearing up as well!) The episode is emotional and heartwarming, perfectly capturing the series' essence. Ps. I wish there were more TV Show Finales like this one.

Things I Liked:

  • Ross and Rachel's reunion

  • Monica and Chandler’s new family

  • Nostalgic and heartfelt moments

Things I Disliked:

Rating: 9.5/10
